Steven founded Calm Spirit as An Shen in 1984 in Boulder, Colorado while attending Boulder School of Massage Therapy, in Boulder, Colorado. (Summer 1983- Fall 1984). He graduated and became a certified Massage Therapist. He began by primarily offering barefoot-style Shiatsu therapy with offices in Denver and Boulder Colorado. In Denver, located within a restored Victorian house that housed Nirvana Counseling Services, a majority of patients were simultaneously being treated for alcohol, drug abuse and eating disorders.
In January of 1987, Steven began his study of Chinese Medicine at the Dechen Yonten Dzo Institute of Buddhist Medicine, (Boulder, Colorado 1987-90) to expand into and refine more specific treatment modalities.
Moving to Florida in 1990 he continued his education at the Institute for Traditional Chinese Nutrition and Healthcare, in North Miami, Fl., for a 3 month Post Graduate Clinical Internship in 1991.
In October 1991, Calm Spirit was incorporated as Calm Spirit Healthcare, Inc. in Jupiter Florida. Also in that year, Steven began publishing information on herbs through Calm Spirit Press (print and new media). With the incorporation of Calm Spirit Healthcare in 1991, he realized his vision of creating a comprehensive Chinese Medical clinic that combines the traditional approaches of Chinese, Japanese and Tibetan style treatment modalities with a Shambhalian / Tibetan Buddhist contemplative environment.
In 1995 Calm Spirit Magazine Online web site was put up on the internet with information on Chinese and Tibetan medicine, Chinese, Tibetan and Japanese massage, Chinese Medical Translations, Qi Gong, and relaxation / meditation. By January 1997, Calmspirit.com was registered as the company domain name.
Calm Spirit Healthcare was located there until June 2003 when Steven relocated the company to Martin County, Florida.
Steven is a member in good standing with the Acupuncture Physicians Association in Florida.
